Samara Morgan As the film opens, two teenage girls Katie Embry (Amber Tamblyn) and Rebecca 'Becca' Kotler (Rachael Bella) discuss the supposedly cursed tape. Katie reveals that, seven days before, she went to a cabin at Shelter Mountain Inn with friends, where she viewed the video tape. After a series of strange occurrences, involving a television in the house turning itself on, Katie is mysteriously killed while Becca watches, causing her to be institutionalized in a mental hospital. Katie's aunt, Rachel (Naomi Watts), is a journalist living in Seattle. At Katie's funeral, Rachel's sister asks her to investigate her daughter's death. Her investigation leads her to the cabin where Katie watched the tape. She finds and watches the tape, the phone rings and a girl says "seven days." The next day she calls Noah, her ex-boyfriend and the father of her precocious son Aidan, to see the video. He asks her to make a copy for further investigation. Aidan watches the tape a couple of days later. After viewing the tape, Rachel experiences nightmares, nose bleeds, and surreal situations (when she pauses a section of the tape in which a fly runs across the screen, which she is able to pluck from the monitor). Rachel investigates the images of a woman seen in the tape, leading her to Anna Morgan, who lived on Moesko Island with her husband Richard and daughter. A tragedy befell the Morgan ranch, in which the horses they raised seemed to go mad and kill themselves, supposedly causing Anna to become depressed and commit suicide. Rachel goes to the Morgan house and finds Richard, who refuses to talk about the video or his daughter. A local doctor tells Rachel that Anna could not carry a baby to term and adopted a child named Samara Morgan (Daveigh Chase). Anna soon complained of visions that only happened when Samara was around, so both were sent to a mental institution. Noah goes to the institution, finds Anna's file and discovers that a video is missing. Rachel returns to the Morgan house, views the missing video and is confronted by Richard, who states the girl was evil. He then electrocutes himself in the bathtub, sending Rachel running out of the house screaming. Noah arrives and, with Rachel, goes to the barn to discover a room where Samara was kept by her father. Behind the wallpaper they discover an image of a tree seen on the tape, which grows near the Shelter Mountain Inn. At the inn, they discover a well underneath the floor, in which Rachel finds the body of Samara, experiencing a vision of how her mother dropped her into it. Rachel notifies the authorities, and Samara is given a proper burial. Rachel informs Aidan that they will no longer be troubled by Samara. However, Aidan is horrified, telling his mother she had freed her body, and that Samara never sleeps. In his apartment, Noah's TV turns on, revealing an image in which Samara crawls from the well, walks toward the screen and crawls out of the set into the room. Samara stares directly at him, frightening him to death – which Rachel discovers after racing to his apartment. Upon returning to her apartment, Rachel destroys and burns the original tape screaming and asking what Samara wants from her. She soon notices the tape marked "COPY" underneath the couch. Worried that Aidan will also die, Rachel realizes the only way to escape is to copy the tape and show it to someone else, continuing the cycle. The movie ends with Rachel helping Aidan to copy the tape and put it in a public library. The Ring Two establishes that her mother, Evelyn Osorio (Sissy Spacek), gave birth to Samara at a Christian hospital. She had a troubled pregnancy, experiencing hallucinations and visions, suffering afterwards from serious PPD. She claimed something from the waters of the afterlife for her baby, implying Samara was possessed by an evil spirit : Evelyn later says to Rachel Keller that "they let the dead get in". Evelyn tried to drown Samara when she still was a baby, but the nuns stopped her. It is revealed later that Evelyn tried to drown Samara because she told her to, supposedly because this was the only way to save Samara from the evil spirits possessing, in a similar fashion as to how Aidan Keller told his mother Rachel she had to drown him to save him from Samara in The Ring 2. Afterwards Evelyn was taken to a mental institution and Samara was adopted by Richard (Brian Cox) and Anna Morgan (Shannon Cochran). Samara possessed the power of "projected thermography" - she can "burn" images into the mind of other living beings or on any recording media. After taking Samara home, Anna had a hard time concentrating and sleeping - her mind would be filled with gruesome images when her daughter was around. Samara's presence made the horses on the Morgan's farm go insane and die, which threw her mother into a deep depression. Samara also never slept and her adopted parents soon were terrified of her. It is unknown if she couldn't control her powers, or if it was a more sinister reason. Anna and Samara were sent to a psychiatric hospital. Richard forced Samara to move into the farm's barn, hoping the distance between her and Anna would alleviate the visions and hallucinations. This did not work, and finally Anna Morgan attempted to kill Samara by pulling a garbage bag over her head, hitting her with a brick and throwing her into a well. Anna then committed suicide by jumping off a nearby cliff. It is unknown how old Samara was when she died, but she looked about twelve or thirteen years old. Samara lived on for seven days in the well, destroying her fingernails while trying to climb out. After she died, her spirit created the cursed video tape using her "projected thermography" power. Anyone watches this tape their phone rings and they will answer and Samara will say "seven days". Seven days later the viewer will suffer a terrible death unless they have shown someone else the tape so that Samara still will be heard. |
