Debra Denise Brown: As a child Alton Coleman was known to his peers as “pissy” because of a bladder problem. Although he was often ridiculed as a youngster, he grew up to be quite a charismatic ladies man (great, another one). A real hit with woman. Alton already had a long list of rapes and violent sexual assaults on his police record before he even met Denise. Denise Brown was one of eleven children in the well-respected Brown family. She was 21 and engaged to another man when she first met Alton. It wasn’t long before she had broken off her engagement, moved out of her parents home and into Alton’s life. It was even a shorter time before she became his accomplice in a state by state sexual attacks and murder rampage.
In May of 1984, nine year old Vernita Wheat convinced her mother to allow her and *Robert Knight* (and his girlfriend) to go to Waukegan, Wisconsin. The purpose of this trip was to pick up a stereo which was going to be a gift for the young Vernita. There was obviously no stereo and soon there was no longer a Vernita. On June 19, Vernita’s body turned up strangled and lifeless. One day earlier, on the 18th, seven year old Tamika Turks and her nine year old aunt were abducted in Gary, Indiana. The two frightened young children were driven into the woods. Alton proceeded to rape, beat and finally strangle Tamika while Denise held her little writhing body down. Denise then grabbed Tamika’s aunt and beat her unconscious. Alton went about his pathetic business and raped the child. Lucky enough to get away because of Denise's ineffective beating, Tamika’s aunt was able to identify both Alton and Denise from a group of photographs. Soon Vernita Wheats’ feebleminded mother also identified the same couple. On June 19th, 25 year old Donna Williams was also reported missing after she agreed to drive the “nice young couple” she met in church to Boston. See how dangerous church can be? Donna’s friends identified the couple as Alton and Denise. On June 27, the missing Donna’s car was found abandoned in Detroit, but with no signs of its owner. On June 24, Denise forced herself into a Detroit woman’s car with a knife and demanded that the woman drive her and Alton to Ohio. The woman was a tad bit smarter than they thought and crashed her car on purpose, successfully fleeing from the scene. Alton and Denise were not about to allow this to put an end to their senseless sexual frenzy. They took the car anyway and drove off to Dearborn Heights where they broke into the Jone’s family home. Palmer and Maggie Jones were beaten with a club and robbed of a whole $86.
For the next few days Alton and Denise were frequently sighted and placed on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list. On July 2, they were back in Detroit and braking into another couple's home. This couple was tied up and mercilessly forced to listen to Alton’s ranting about the “other” blacks who were “forcing” him to kill his own race. You see, all of the people that Alton and Denise attacked were also black. Taking pity upon their ear, Alton stole the couple's car and drove to Toledo where they robbed another couple for their car! Their creativity and skill for coming up with new schemes was astounding! On July 7, Alton and Denise convinced Virginia Temple to let them spend the night at her home. The next morning Virginia and her 10 year old daughter’s raped and beaten bodies were stuffed into garbage bags and dumped. in Cincinnati, Ohio. A few days later, the body of 15 year old Tonnie Story was found raped and stabbed with 2 gun shots in the head. Witnesses reported seeing her with Alton and Denise before she disappeared. Can you see the mind-dulling pattern? These same kind of attacks go on for the next week or so in neighboring towns. Several more woman were raped and killed and even a few men were attacked for their vehicles.
Finally on July 20, the police received an anonymous phone call on A & D’s location. When the cops surrounded them they were in the process of getting rid of 2 bloody knives and a gun. The last stolen car was dusted for prints and Denise’s hands showed up all over it. Brilliant.
The both of them were tried for several of the murders. The Tonnie Story murder gave both of them the death sentence and Alton an extra 100 years for Tamika Turks’ murder. They were being convicted in several states and at her last sentencing Denise Brown slipped a note to the judge that read, “I killed the bitch and I don't give a damn. I had fun out of it...but i am a more kind and understanding and lovable person than many people think I am”. Boo hoo you wanker, aren't we all a bit misunderstood? The judge, further angered and disgusted by this action, sentenced her to another 40 years. Is that even legal? Who cares. Sad sad woman. only a true fool would put her life on the line so that a lover could rape other woman and children.
